What is the Difference Between the Monel 400 and K500?
Monel 400 and K500, while both part of the Monel family, have distinct differences. Monel 400 comprises nickel, copper, and small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon, and silicon. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in acidic and alkaline environments and retains strength at high temperatures. In contrast, Monel K500 includes added aluminium and titanium, which enhance its strength and hardness compared to Monel 400. This makes Monel K500 particularly suitable for highly corrosive applications, such as seawater environments. Monel 400 is typically preferred for non-saltwater applications, including industrial chemical plants and marine engineering projects.
