Grades 304, 321, and 347 stainless steels share a common characteristic: they have the same basic chemical composition, consisting of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. However, while their composition is similar, the properties of grades 347 and 321 differ slightly due to the addition of stabilizing elements to their alloy. For example, 347 stainless steel round bars are stabilized by the inclusion of niobium.

When niobium is added to austenitic stainless steel grades, like ASTM A276 Type 347 flat bar, it plays a crucial role in stabilizing carbon, especially when the alloy is exposed to elevated temperatures. Similar to how titanium enhances the high-temperature resistance of grade 321, niobium makes the ASTM A479 UNS S34700 hex bar more stable and capable of delivering excellent performance under high-temperature conditions. Niobium also contributes to the strengthening of the steel, making it more durable.
Due to its capacity to withstand raised temperatures, the JIS SUS 347 black bar exhibits welding and forming characteristics that range from good to excellent. Moreover, the impact resistance of this alloy makes it well-suited for use in cryogenic settings, where it can be used in equipment exposed to extremely low temperatures. Unlike carbon or alloy steels, which may fail in such environments, the AISI 347 threaded bar offers reliable performance and quick connections. Additional properties of the SS 347 bright bar include resistance to scaling, corrosion resistance in aqueous media, and good phase stability, making it a versatile material for various applications.
